- Features: The color of the
brow of male and female, the crown of the head, back head
is black with glossy green tint. The color from back head
to the upper part of neck is white. The color is the bottom
of chin, throat, forehead, and the lower side of neck is
silky white. the side is reddish brown. The tail is black,
but some of the feathers are white or brown. The big feathers
and the middle feathers covering wings are black brown.
The small feathers covering wings are white. The upper beak
is dark brown or light red, and the lower beak is dark red.
The legs are black.
- Mode of life: One or a group
of 2-3 of them can be found at lakes and estuaries. One
or a pair of them live the life on the water soaking their
body including so far as their back into water.
- Call: Females and males have
the same note like "kit-kit-kit", and the males
fighting a battle are heard "boo-boo" while the
chickens are heard "peeyo-peeyo".
- Breeding place: They breed
among the field of reeds and the surface or edge of water
thick with rushes. They have the plate-shaped nest..

Breeding time: They breed from May till early in August,
and the number of eggs of the same litter is 3-5. The color
of the eggs is blue or pure white. They are long ovals.
Some males and females brood over their eggs for hatching
together, but usually females do that. They cover their
nest with water grass to hide it when they leave their nest.
The eggs hatch out 21-28 days after they start brooding
over their eggs for hatching. The chickens are covered with
pinfeathers
- Taste : They usually live
on fishes, but sometimes they have Urodela, Anura, Gastropoda
of Mollusca, Carabidae, the larvae of dragonflies, cicadas,
and the bud of reed.
- Range: They can be found
in Turkistan, Tibet, the southern part of China, Mongolia,
Manchuria, and Ussuri. In winter, they go to the Mediterranean
Sea, Persia, Gulf, the northern part of India, Myanmar,
the southern part of China, Korea and Japan to pass the
winter.
