[Whooper swan] Cygnus Cygnus (LINNAEUS)

  • Features: Females and males are pure white. Their vivid yellow skin protrude in front of their eyes. The beak is vivid yellow. The color from the end of the beak to the nostril is black, and the lower beak is black, too. The legs are black or grayish black.
  • Mode of life: They walk about on the ground and hunt. they go south along the coast including reservoirs, lakes and marshes, estuaries, and bays and they pass the winter. They live in the shallow surface of water and search for food swimming actively here and there. They bend their neck in a S-shaped way while swimming, but they put up their neck straightly. They live in the water or on the ground searching for food day and night. They fly in a slant line or V-line.
  • Call: They have the note similar to the sound of trumpet, "hot-ho-hot-ho" or "ho-ho", and they are heard "gwa-an-gwa-an" or "gwag-go-gwag-go" while they are flying.
  • Breeding place: They make a big volcano-shaped conical nest in about 30 centimeter deep water which is about 15 meters from lakeside. The nest is made up of leaves and stems of grass and is hardened by clay. The upper part is sunken and the place for eggs is covered with pinfeathers of mother bird's breast or stomach.
  • Breeding time: They lay eggs from late in May till early in June. The number of eggs of the same litter is 3-7. The color is creamy white. They weigh 326-348 grams.
  • Taste: They have the stems or roots of freshwater plants and berries, and they also have not a few insects living in water and small freshwater animals.
  • Range: They can be found in the taiga in the western part of Siberia, Altai in Russia, the northern part of Mongolia, the northwestern part of Manchuria, from Sea of Okhotsk to the lower courses of Amur, the northern part of Ussuri, and Sakhalin.
