[Family Ostreidae] Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg)

  • The shell has the shape of a cone or a twig, whose left and right sides show a growth gland with overlapped with the shape of a scale. The shell is white and its radial rib is thick and crooked. The end part overlapped with the shape of a scale is purple. The left side is little shorter than the right side, and the end of right one is projected. The shape of shell is changeable according to the circumstance. The shape of the ones in a tidal zone is a cone. It spawns from June till September.
  • Habitat: It is stuck on the rocks in a tidal zone and lives on plankton.
  • Range: It is in the Eastern Seaside, the Western Seaside, and Jejudo Island. Especially it is usually found in the Western Seaside. It also lives in Japan and China.
