- Gunsan inner port is a modernistic harbor equipped with
3 floating stages of 3,000 tons and 5 floating stages of
5,000 tons from 1899 till 1950, which has led the development
of Jeollabuk-do including Gunsan. The role of an international
port has transferred to the outer port because of the inflow
of earth and sand, but it is now a popular fishing port
because it is close by the downtown.
The port is located in the way of Geumgang to the Western
Sea, facing the Geumgang Estuary and Janghang in Chungcheongnam-do.
It has played the role of wharf for coastal passenger ships
and the ships for official work or college students' practice
instead of the role of the port for trade since 1980's,
but it has shared the joys and sorrows of life with the
citizens of Gunsan since 1899 when it was open. It is now
a cultural space near water with the Baengnyeon Square of
the entrance constructed in celebration of the 100th anniversary
of opening Gunsan Port.
The port has been so close to the life of the citizens for
a long time that it has been on their mind when they have
been away from Gunsan. It is crowded with the citizens who
want to avoid the heat at summer night, and the young sometimes
show the romantic scene by diving from the high concrete
construction linking the floating stages after greeting
to the citizens. Many anglers cast their lines in the water
to catch the gobies in autumn. Although the cargo ships
loading and unloading goods and the merchant ships coming
and going around there have been replaced by the coastal
passenger ships to Seonyudo Island and Eocheongdo Island
and the ferry boats between Gunsan and Janghang, the floating
stages are still there with flying seagulls.
