Under the influence of Gunsan's geographical location combining the inland and islands, Yongwang Gut (exorcism) has been prevalent for a long time to pray for the safety of those who travel the sea and a good haul, which the hereditary shamans pacify the Yongwang (Dragon God) with delightful performance of both song and dance.
In old days, Yongwang Gut was frequently held in every early June and July in lunar calendar, as there were many hereditary shamans. But it has been hardly held since 1960, apart from the Yongwang Gut that has been specially arranged by ship owners.
The Yongwang Gut of this area combines the features of both inland and island, which has something to do with the geographical condition of Gunsan. Yongwang Gut in inland only prays for the safety at the river or stream while that in island mainly prays for a good haul by pacifying the spirit of those who were drowned in the sea.
Yongwang Gut consists of seven episodes: Yongwangkangshin Gut ?’Bujeong Gut ?’Yukaphaeweonpuri Gut ?’Seonwangpuri Gut ??Jungcheonhaewon Gut ?’Kiweon Gut ?’Yongwangsajapuri Gut. Five or six shamans sang a song and played instruments including Jangko, Jing, Ajeng and Danso by turns from morning to night.
Although the control power of shamans was divided into two areas: east and west, Yongwang Gut was unique joint event for two groups of shaman. When shamans fixed a date, ship owners, fish dealers and fishermen contributed their offering such as rice, fruits and cotton cloth. Under a marquee fixed towards the Gogunsan, Yongwang Gut started from Daejabi Gut that invited the God of Mt. Weolmyeong.
Based on the historical point of view, Park Sun-Ho, a professor of Weonkwang University, and Lee Byeong-Hun, a former director of the Gunsan Cultural Center, restored the Yongwang Gut that had been hardly kept alive as a modified form combined with the Buddhist civilization in the process of modernization. The restored Yongwang Gut seems to talk with Gods of both mountain and sea to pray for escaping a disaster.
